Porch Swings — All Styles, Materials & Sizes
Collection Details & Buying Guide
A porch swing is the single piece of outdoor furniture that most transforms a front porch from a passageway into a destination. We carry the largest selection of porch swings online — recycled plastic, cedar, cypress, and treated wood, in classic highback, rollback, Adirondack, mission, and Savannah styles, from 2-foot to 7-foot, at every price point. Whether you want a low-maintenance recycled plastic porch swing in a bold color or a traditional cedar porch swing with natural wood character, there's a porch swing here built to fit your porch and your budget. Free shipping on every order.
How to choose a porch swing
The three key decisions when buying a porch swing are material, size, and style.
Material
Recycled plastic poly lumber is the best long-term choice for most homeowners — completely maintenance-free, UV-stable, and impervious to moisture, rot, and insects. Cedar and cypress offer natural wood beauty but require annual or biennial sealing in most climates. Treated pine is the most affordable wood option but requires the most upkeep over time. Here's how the four materials compare side by side:
| Material | Maintenance | Typical Lifespan | Weather Resistance | Price Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recycled Plastic (Poly) | None — never needs staining, sealing, or painting | 20+ years, often lifetime-warrantied | Won't rot, crack, splinter, or fade; impervious to insects and moisture | $$–$$$ |
| Cedar | Reseal every 1–2 years to maintain color | 15–20 years with upkeep | Naturally rot- and insect-resistant; will gray without sealing | $$$ |
| Cypress | Reseal every 1–2 years to maintain color | 15–20 years with upkeep | Naturally rot- and insect-resistant, tight grain sheds water well | $$ |
| Treated Pine | Reseal or repaint every 1–2 years, most upkeep of the four | 10–15 years with consistent upkeep | Chemically treated for rot/insect resistance; least weather-stable of the four | $ |
Size
A 4-foot porch swing comfortably seats 2 adults and fits most standard porch widths. A 5-foot porch swing seats 2–3 people. Measure the width of your porch opening and ensure at least 18 inches of clearance on each side of the swing — a 6-foot-wide porch needs a 4-foot swing at most. Read our complete porch swing sizing guide →
Style
Classic highback and rollback porch swings are the most versatile and suit virtually any home style. Adirondack-style porch swings feature the iconic fan-back profile. Mission porch swings have a horizontal-slat Arts & Crafts aesthetic. Savannah porch swings have a more ornate, Southern character. Read our complete porch swing style guide →
How to hang a porch swing
Porch swings hang from ceiling joists using eye bolts, chains or rope, and a hanging kit. Each attachment point should support at least 3x the total expected load (furniture + occupants). Stainless steel hardware is strongly recommended in any climate with humidity or moisture exposure. See our complete porch swing installation guide →
Porch swing FAQs
How much does a porch swing cost?
Porch swings typically range from $300 for a basic treated-pine swing to $1,000+ for a large recycled-plastic or premium cedar swing. Recycled plastic porch swings usually cost more upfront than treated pine but need zero ongoing maintenance, which makes them the better long-term value.
What is the best material for a porch swing?
Recycled plastic (poly) is the best material for a porch swing that stays outside year-round with zero maintenance — it won't rot, crack, splinter, or fade, and it's backed by a lifetime warranty on most models. If you prefer a traditional wood look, cedar is the next best option thanks to its natural rot resistance.
How much weight can a porch swing hold?
Most porch swings are rated between 350 and 800 lbs depending on size and construction, with larger swing beds rated even higher. Always check the weight capacity on the specific product page, and make sure your mounting hardware and ceiling joists are rated to support at least 3x that load.
Can a porch swing stay outside in winter?
Recycled plastic porch swings can stay outside year-round, including winter, without damage from snow, ice, or freezing temperatures. Wood porch swings (cedar, cypress, or pine) should be covered or have cushions removed during harsh winters to extend their lifespan.
What size porch swing do I need?
Measure the width of your porch opening first. A 4-foot porch swing needs roughly 5–6 feet of clear width and comfortably seats two adults; a 5-foot swing needs 6–7 feet and seats two to three. Leave at least 18 inches of clearance on each side for the swing to move freely.
Do I need a stand to hang a porch swing?
No — if you have a covered porch with ceiling joists, you can hang a porch swing directly using eye bolts and chains. A freestanding A-frame stand is only needed if you don't have a porch roof, or if you want to place the swing elsewhere in the yard.
